This intensive 5-day training course provides participants with the advanced conceptual framework and practical statistical tools required to rigorously assess the causal impact of development, social, and policy programmes. The curriculum is built upon global best practices, focusing on how to design evaluations that isolate the net effect of an intervention from other external factors. Participants will gain mastery over the core concepts of counterfactual analysis and learn to select the most appropriate evaluation methodology—ranging from experimental designs (RCTs) to various quasi-experimental and non-experimental methods—to answer the critical question: "What difference did the programme truly make?"
The course begins by establishing a strong foundation in evaluation planning, including developing a robust Theory of Change and framing effective evaluation questions. It quickly transitions into the technical application of advanced data analysis techniques, providing hands-on practice with statistical software (Stata or R) for methods such as Propensity Score Matching (PSM), Difference-in-Differences (DiD), and regression analysis for impact attribution. The final modules focus on data quality management, integrating qualitative insights for holistic understanding, and translating complex statistical findings into clear, actionable reports for policymakers and stakeholders, ensuring evaluation results lead to informed decision-making.

Training Methodology
Trainer Experience
Our trainers are seasoned impact evaluation specialists and published academics who have led large-scale evaluations for international development agencies, governments, and NGOs worldwide. They possess deep expertise in both econometric analysis and applied M&E, ensuring the training material is grounded in rigorous academic theory while being entirely relevant to practical programming realities.
Quality Statement
We are dedicated to delivering a technically robust and practically applicable training experience. The course content adheres to the methodological standards set by leading international development banks and evaluation networks. We guarantee a small class size, personalized mentorship, and access to curated, high-quality data sets for hands-on practice, ensuring participants leave with tangible, usable skills.
Tailor-made courses
We offer the flexibility to customize this training to focus on specific sectors (e.g., health, education, infrastructure), particular methodological challenges (e.g., dealing with small samples, measuring institutional change), or the use of specific statistical software platforms (e.g., prioritizing R over Stata). We can also integrate your organization's internal data sets and M&E protocols into the practical sessions.
Course Duration: 5 days
Training fee: USD 1500
Practical session: Reviewing an existing programme and drafting three key evaluation questions (Process, Outcome, and Impact).
Practical session: Designing a full Logic Model and Theory of Change for a hypothetical development intervention.
Practical session: Analyzing three case studies and justifying the most appropriate impact evaluation design for each, based on its context.
Practical session: Cleaning, labeling, and merging simulated baseline and endline survey data using Stata or R, followed by generating descriptive statistics.
Practical session: Implementing Propensity Score Matching (PSM) in Stata/R on a dataset and assessing covariate balance before and after matching.
Practical session: Applying the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) regression method to a two-period panel data set and interpreting the causal coefficient.
Practical session: Calculating the Required Sample Size for a cluster-randomized trial using given parameters (Minimum Detectable Effect, significance, and power).
Practical session: Running a multivariate regression model to estimate programme impact and testing for significant Treatment Heterogeneity across two key subgroups.
Practical session: Developing a structured coding framework for a set of sample interview transcripts and linking qualitative themes to quantitative findings.
Practical session: Drafting an Executive Summary and key policy recommendations based on a simulated set of final impact evaluation results.
